Welcome to the Project Management chapter. In this chapter, we’ll take a look at the different stages of project management, from the initial idea to project closure.

Aims of the chapter

This chapter is an introduction to project management, including:

  • The basics of project management, turning concepts into successful projects, using brainstorming to inform ideas, managing stakeholders, building an effective team, and the project management life cycle.
  • The launch phase, carrying out a feasibility study, drafting the project charter, gathering requirements, mapping stakeholders and holding a successful launch meeting.
  • Drafting specifications, defining the scope of action, planning with PERT and GANTT diagrams, managing the budget, controlling risks and preparing a communication plan.
  • Implementation strategies, setting SMART objectives, the role of the steering committee and stakeholders, and identifying difficulties in implementing the project.
  • Taking delivery of deliverables, learning from the project management experience, writing up the project review, ensuring a successful closing meeting and the steps to be taken after project closure.
